My favorite things to make

In the world of ceramics, the joy of creating functional and aesthetically pleasing pieces is unparalleled. This is particularly true for me when I set out to create my favorite functional items: mugs and noodle bowls.

If I am being perfectly honest, coffee mugs were the reason I got into pottery in the first place. Crafting the perfect mug involves a delicate balance between form and functionality. The shape must feel comfortable in the hand and the handle should be both ergonomic and visually appealing. The challenge here is making a piece that is both beautiful and also enhances the overall drinking experience. 

Handmade mugs are set apart from mass produced ones due to the potter's personal touch. Being someone that does not like making two of the same; I find joy in the individuality of each of my pieces. Sure, they can resemble each other, very much like siblings or cousins might; but they are never the same. No two designs are identical; textures, patterns and carving lines all differ slightly from each other making each piece one of a kind. For me, that is where the magic lives.

I fell in love with making noodle bowls this past year. Crafting these bowls involves a different set of considerations, combining aesthetics with the practicality of serving and enjoying a comforting bowl of noodles).

As with mugs, I find noodle bowls need to be both aesthetically pleasing and functional. The bowl depth, the rim width... Striking the right balance in size and shape is crucial to creating a bowl that enhances the dining experience.

Adding texture to noodle bowls elevates their visual appeal. Altering the surface through experimentation with carving, stamping or even strategic glaze application can add depth and character to each piece.

I have had an enormous amount of fun playing with the different sizes and shapes; from straight walled bowls to full bellied ones. Each one of them proved to be a statement piece in and of itself, and I could not be more proud of every single one.

As I continue to explore the possibilities within these two beloved items, each creation becomes a testament to the limitless potential of clay and the enduring beauty of handmade craftsmanship.
